Promoting real Life Observations for Gaining Understanding of road user behaviour in Europe

Areas of application

The main objectives are

  • to identify the research topics and research questions related to road safety as well as to other road transport issues such as emissions (eco-driving) and traffic management (e.g. highway capacity) where the naturalistic observation approach is especially suited for providing unique knowledge that is not available by alternative and more traditional research methods.

The focus of the work is on the identification of current research topics and applications, as well as on potential topics and issues for future studies and applications, based on an assessment of the unique methodological characteristics of the naturalistic approach.

  • to identify relevant users of knowledge provided by the naturalistic observation approach, and their interests.

The focus of the work is on the identification of interests and the related research questions of potential user groups which will result in a questionnaire for members of the User Forum.

In conclusion, an inventory of applications and research questions for the naturalistic observation approach will be presented, which will serve as input for further specifications of the contents of the field trials.
